Every winter, the white sand salt marshes of Kutch comes alive with a riot of colours. This year, the festival will be celebrated between 1 November 2018 and 20 February 2019, during the chilly winter months when the desert is most attractive. The festival celebrates the unique culture of Gujarat with music and dance performances, storytelling sessions, walks through the desert, fabulous displays of handicrafts and of course some authentic, mouth-watering food native to the Rann of Kutch.

During the festival, the best of local talent from all over Gujarat come together to create beautiful music in the white sand. Enjoy spectacular performances under the moonlight and learn about the traditional music and culture of Gujarat.

Take to the desert on camels or enjoy a hot air balloon ride over Kutch to get a birds-eye view of the desert. There are a variety of experiences designed for people of all age groups including kid-friendly activities. One thing is for sure, you’re not going to get bored!

The local community in Gujarat has much to offer in terms of the arts. Meet highly talented artisans who excel in traditional handicraft making and attend workshops where you can learn all about the arts and crafts of Gujarat and even take back home some beautiful showpieces.

Kutch is famous for its mirrored embroidery work that is traditionally stitched by the local village women. You can also pick up hand block prints, wood carvings, beautiful silver jewellery and even little seashell toys for kids.

Rann Utsav is held at the Dhordo village, 80 km north of the Bhuj city in Kutch. The closest station and airport is at Bhuj from where you can drive down to the festival. There are also private luxury coaches that run from cities in Maharashtra and Gujarat to Bhuj.

For a truly authentic experience, you can stay at the festival venue itself in gorgeous Swiss tents with wooden carpets and beautiful porches overlooking the desert. It is also the perfect opportunity to meet other like-minded travellers who are camping with you.

Whatever you do, just keep your eyes and your heart wide open, for there’s always a beautiful story, a pretty piece of art or a wonderful tune waiting to be seen and heard.
