Avoid long baggage check lines this summer by traveling with a carry-on. We know, we know — it can be hard to pack all of your necessities in a carry-on, but trust us, it can be done.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the mishandling of checked baggage is at a higher rate this year compared to before the pandemic. Data from the U.S. Department of Transportation show that about 6.5 out of every 1,000 bags checked on a flight by a U.S. airline were mishandled.

We all know how frustrating losing a bag or experiencing baggage delays when traveling can feel. Here are tips for how to pack your carry-on so you can ditch checking luggage.

It all starts with the right bag. Make sure that the carry-on bag you choose fits with the airline’s dimension requirements. Some airlines have weight requirements for carry-ons as well. 

Depending on the type of traveler you are, there are a few options when choosing carry-on baggage. Hard-shell luggage is great for protecting your items, while soft exterior bags provide more flexibility when fitting them under seats or in the overhead cabin. 

Let’s be real — most of the time we pack outfits, shoes, and even beauty products that go unused while on vacation. When packing your carry-on, make sure you pack what you will realistically use. To save room, you can transfer products like shampoos, lotion, and fragrances into smaller containers so it complies with TSA’s regulations.

Purchasing packing cubes are amazing to keep your carry-on strategically organized. You can also use zip-top bags to keep your items organized. 

Instead of folding your clothes, try rolling them. Put loose items like jewelry, underwear, and socks in shoes or between your rolled clothing. Any gap in your luggage can be filled. 

Choose key pieces that you know will be utilized in multiple ways such as a white t-shirt, jeans, sneakers, heels, etc. Wear your heaviest clothing items on your flight to save room in your luggage. 

Packing a carry-on is definitely an art form. The more you try it, the easier it will become.
