Although it is gradual, in the past two decades, pearl has changed from a lady's jewelry favored by brides and grandmothers to arguably the most promising and provocative participant in the gem industry. This is the jewelry story of the 2020s.

Not long ago, the words pearl and trend did not have to be put in one sentence. Seaborne gemstones are sold in the form of charms or exquisite pendant earrings, which are perfect for women who love traditions, but are rarely (if any) used in the avant-garde environment that subverts their long-standing reputation as ultra-feminine.

These identical gems now play the protagonists in some of the most provocative, gender-curved series in the history of the industry. Mikimoto boldly collaborated with Commes des Garçons in January 2020 to launch a series of pearl necklaces designed specifically for men, marking a major change in the image of gems.

Contemporary designers have accepted this dialogue and collaborated with it. For example, last month, the British jewelry brand Missoma launched its second gender-inclusive collection and set foot in the pearl field for the first time. These fashion pieces are made of gilded metal and freshwater pearls, and are unisex, further consolidating the concept of genderless pearls.

The combination of pearls and gold will only enhance their fashion charm. Check out the nine works highlighted below (and at the top) to prove the winning combination.
