An overnight fire displaced three of Van Buren’s homes

After a fire broke out early Friday morning, firefighters rescued a resident of a two-story house on Van Buren Champlain Street.

According to media reports, the Van Buren Fire Department responded to a report of a structural fire at 109 Champlain Street at about 12:15 am. When the staff arrived, flames were shooting out of the windows on the second floor.

Firefighters successfully rescued a person who climbed onto the roof of the porch. Van Buren ambulance personnel assessed the unidentified person at the scene and transported him to Cary Medical Center in Caribou for smoke inhalation treatment.

The other two passengers escaped safely by themselves. A cat and a dog were also rescued from the burning building.

Firefighters controlled the fire on the second floor of the house and quickly put it out. Van Buren fire officials said that there was a major fire on the second floor and severe flooding on the first floor.

The American Red Cross was called to help homeless residents. Currently, the fire is under investigation. There is no news about the cause of the fire.

The Grand Island Fire Department provided mutual assistance and Van Buren Water, and Van Buren Electric Power Company provided assistance on site.

The temperature dropped to near zero overnight.
