According to police sources, a 16-year-old girl accidentally shot herself in the eye while handling a loaded gun.

Sources said the incident occurred shortly before 5 pm on Friday in an apartment on Sheridan Avenue near East 172nd Street in Mount Eden in the Bronx.

Police said the teenager was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital after a shot in the eye and is expected to survive. A department spokesperson did not provide more information.

The source said that the weapon belonged to the girl's boyfriend. He stayed at the scene, admitted to possessing the weapon, and was arrested for illegal possession of the gun.

The source said that the police found a loaded 0.380-caliber gun and a 0.380-caliber cartridge case at the scene.
