There was a special meaning behind Queen Elizabeth’s brooch, and we almost missed it. (Key word: almost.)
Last week, the 96-year-old monarch attended the 2022 Chelsea Flower Show in London. During the royal outing, the queen wore a bright pink coat over a floral dress and accessorized the look with a three-strand pearl necklace and white gloves. However, her gorgeous brooch stole the show for more reasons than one.
The Cartier brooch features two beautiful flowers with diamond centers, each surrounded by pink or blue sapphires. As Hello! magazine points out, the accessory holds a special meaning to Queen Elizabeth because it was given to her as a gift from her parents, King George VI and the Queen Mother, on her 19th birthday. (Just let that sink in.)
The queen’s appearance at the Flower Show is a pretty big deal. You see, the annual event was canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Then in 2021, it was postponed for the same reason. Many didn’t know whether she would attend, especially because she’s been experiencing mobility issues as of late. (This explains why she was escorted in a cart.)
Queen Elizabeth wasn’t the only member of the royal family who attended the Chelsea Flower Show. Other guests included Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie (Countess of Wessex), along with Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
The Chelsea Flower Show has been around since 1862, but it was originally called RHS Great Spring Show. The purpose is to highlight noteworthy floral displays, gardens and other horticulture designs that were created by locals.
