Bhubaneswar artist uses discarded coconut shells to make accessories and decorations

Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], September 20 (ANI): A Bhubaneswar artist turns into an entrepreneur and uses coconut shells, which are usually thrown into the temple city as rubbish. The 41-year-old artist makes accessories, displays and other home decorations, and provides training to people in remote areas to improve their skills. He also established MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises). Artist Devi Prashad Dash said in an interview with ANI: “Every day, I find a large number of used coconut shells thrown away by the temple administration in Orissa. These coconut shells can be used to make decorations and practical products.” He was right. The enthusiasm for protecting the environment later became a profession by using used coconut shells in the temple city to "turn waste into treasure".

He started making items in 2011, further expanded the scope of his work by setting up training units, and began to sell products online through social media platforms. He said: "I have registered with MSMEs and even have the opportunity to set up a booth in the exhibition. I plan to collect all the used (discarded) coconut shells and make them into antique jewelry, home decorations, and national Birds, peacocks and other animals. Then, I use special tools to cut the shells and use adhesives to connect all the parts. I also use environmentally friendly colors to paint peacocks, jewelry and other home decorations. I have coconut shell products and the price starts from 5,000 rupees It ranges from 500,000 rupees," he added. In addition to making decorations, he also provides skills training for people living in remote areas of the state. "I visit remote areas of the state and provide skills training for people to improve their skills. I set up a training center in my residence in Bhubaneswar and train students," he said. (ANI)
